Coach Heldt's Notes

How lucky you are.

I had just rushed across town from work to catch the beginning of my youngest son’s game. I like to stand away from the crowd and watch the game even in the pouring rain. I’ve learned that if I’m watching a game and not coaching that I get easily annoyed by some of the comments that go on in a crowd. I’m there to watch the game. I want to see a good game, not listen to one group cut down another group. If a player is doing well on either team I make note of it, and I’ll even acknowledge a good play even if it’s by the opposing team. You do that when you’re coaching. why not when you’re only watching a game. This is the main reason I often like to keep to myself. You should treat both teams with some respect. I also don’t like standing near enough to hear goofy comments about how the coach or players are doing on our own team. I don’t like that, so I avoid it. If anything, I’m there to support the team, the coach, and my son. When I’m coaching and I screw up, I’m quite sure I’m aware of it and I’ll try to make any adjustments. When you watch a game you can’t make those adjustments. You rely on the coach. Some people yell and scream, but that’s not my bag. So here I am watching the game in the rain and I turn to see my wife and Nic walking down the path towards the field. I know Nic can only stay for a short while before he has to go get ready for his own game. Right there with them comes Devin. This was a big surprise for me. Everyone but me knew he was coming home for the weekend. This is what it’s all about. All three boys playing lacrosse, supporting each other, and spending some time together. We watched Tyler play and then we all drove over to watch Nic play in the Varsity game. Devin got to meet up with a few of his old teammates and say hello to his old coaches. It was a good night. It’s been a good weekend so far even with a rainstorm coming through the area last night. Hockey and Lacrosse have been very big in our family, and they still continue to bring us all together. Why waist time screaming and yelling from the sideline? Just smile and enjoy every minute of it. Take it all in and realize how lucky you are.
