Friday night’s game would set the tone for the weekend. The question on everyone’s mind was “how would the team play after having such a tough time at the last tournament?” The plan was laid out before the game. Everyone would have to work together and play a very simple game. Keep the puck out of our end, and get it deep in the offensive zone and cycle the puck low. Pull their defense apart and shoot through the holes. Look for the loose pucks in front of the goal. The other team had three very good skaters who liked to run up through the middle and create turnovers. This created a few breakaways for them so we staggered our defense to shut these runs down. We also took a few good runs through the neutral zone and in on the slot. This worked and we won the game. Saturday’s game was not what we expected. We knew our second opponent, the host team had a good goalie, but we’d move him out of position by sliding the puck and coming in from behind the net. What we didn’t figure on was that they would jam up the slot clogging up the shots with warm bodies. The goalie only had to play low behind the traffic. Usually this creates opportunities, but we either shot too high or right at the goalie. We did a good job of pressuring the puck and passing along the boards. We out shot them about two to one, but the game ended in a three/three tie with just over two minutes left in the game. The game was subjected to a curfew clock, which had run out. We still had gained enough points to maintain a lead. We have our next game against the # 2 team, but now we may be missing our captain for this game. Hopefully he will be feeling better and can join the team. Anything can happen at this point. With snow coming down around us it looks like spring is a long way off. My oldest son will be playing in the goal for the Cannoneers as they head to Elmira for some college Lacrosse. Devin’s used to playing in the snow, but I will be heading into our third and possible championship game knowing both Tyler and Devin will have their hands full trying to help their teams do well. Nick is probably playing X-Box today. Two things to remember: If you want something, you have to work for it, and teamwork means everyone must contribute. Our team has done very well this weekend so far. The teams all look evenly matched, but it all boils down to playing smart and working together. We will continue to keep it simple and see just how far we can go. We were the only team that didn’t win an event in the skills competition yesterday, but everyone got to compete in an event. I was proud of each of them. We’re focusing on the main objective; play well and have some fun while doing it. And now for a blast from the past here’s AC/DC with a little “Back in Black” Tst. Tst. Tst.…….etc
