Saturday’s game – just a bad experience! There was a greasy creepiness about the whole situation. There must have been something in the air. It was evident that we were not the favorite sons and daughters. I can’t say that we played our best, but it certainly looked like the kind of situation where all I can do is feel my blood pressure rise. I wasn’t happy with the officiating, and not impressed with any part of the game. I have learned over the years to abide by the rules and practice good sportsmanship myself. Maybe I was too quiet this time, but then again maybe it was a good thing. It aint easy, but I have a feeling that hockey karma has a way of working things out. Now today was a good hockey day. We went north and played a well-coached team, a great goalie, and had very good officiating. It was good hockey, our team played very well, and there were some great coaches who came to watch the game. I got to see a lot of old friends, and I was very proud of our team. It was kind of funny how a real bad day was followed by such a great day. I went from dealing with coaches with questionable ethics to coaches who have helped me over the years learn to love the game and give back a little to the sport. The original coach Heldt was there next to the bench with my mom watching the game. Coach Ben Calhoun and his wife Karen were also there. Ben taught me a lot about defense when we coached together. Even Don the referee is one of the best coaches I have had the privilege to learn from. There were a lot of great coaches in that rink. That was one thing that I was always aware of in the North Country. Hockey is woven into the very fabric of life in the land of ice and snow. I was extremely proud of our team, and very happy that everyone had a chance to see what a great bunch of kids these players are. In the end it’s all about the kids. Sure there will always be a few knuckleheads that you’ll run into from time to time, but so what? Luckily I have known a heck of a lot more hockey players.
