I was back at the rink again this weekend to sneak in one more free skate session before the regular season starts. Some of the players were there skating around the rink with my son. I was trying to determine if skating with a knee brace was really any better or worse than skating without one. I really don’t like the brace. It feels like I’m twisting my leg the wrong way. It’s probably the right way, but I’ve gotten very accustomed to it twisting the wrong way over the years. The last two times I wore it I could hardly walk off the ice. This time I gave up and took it off. Yeah that felt better. I thought – hey I’m ok. I think my knee is fixed. Five more laps and I’m pretty sure I’m right back to where I can skate, but I wouldn’t want to have to do any double axels. I’m sure no one would want to see that anyways. It does take a few weeks to get back at it. A few weeks off the ice and I can feel it when I get back out there. Although there is no official sport called free skate I do think there should be a few new rules added to this past time. Left hand turns must be compensated by an equal amount of right hand turns. This means that we should skate 50% counter clockwise and 50% clockwise – everybody; even the rink attendants who never seem to actually wear skates. No pizza breaks during free skate. I don’t like skating past the window and looking out to see my own son eating a slice of pizza while I’m out here starving. What’s worse is when he waves to me, points to the pizza, laughs, and then takes a bite. Boy oh boy I could sure go for a nice slice of cheese pizza and a orange slush puppy right about now. No, I must stick to the program and skate many more laps. Well maybe I should rest my knee. I wonder if he’s going to finish that?
