I knew I should have gone to bed earlier Friday night, but Nick had a late practice and I needed to pick him up. I finally settled down at 11pm, closed my eyes for thirty minutes and the phone rang. I got called in to work; I headed back home at four o’clock in the morning. The plan was to get some sleep before heading north to see Devin play against Broome County. He and his team had just gotten back from a road trip down south to play a few games to get ready for the regular season. I was tired, but that wouldn’t keep me away from heading north and watching the game. It was an exciting game to watch. JCC looked pretty good, and they seem to be getting better every time I see them. Now after the game we headed back south bringing Dev and his massive collection of laundry to spend the night, while still trying to make it to the hockey team’s end of the season party. By six I’m a bit worn out, but that wouldn’t keep me from saying goodbye to the team for the regular season. No matter how many times I’ve been through this with different teams I never get used to it. This was a good team that did very well, and worked at it each step of the way. That’s an achievement that I can’t really describe very well here. You’d have to have been through it with these players to see how hard these kids worked. When they fell down, they got right back up and turned the wick up. If they can work that hard all season, then I can make it to the party. It was great to see everybody again. I got up early this morning and drove Dev back north so he could get to his part time job and get ready for the school week. On the way home I tried to come up with something to write that would describe the whole season in some poetic fashion, but I couldn’t. All I can really say is that this team worked hard to be champions, and that is what they are. It was an honor to be their coach. Now as the ice is starting to break up out on the lake and our weekly schedule is peppered with lacrosse games and practices, I hope I can find where I stored my old roller blades last fall. Hey, I can’t stop skating just because the ice melted. Plus ca change
