It’s Lacrosse season once again, and this means our three boys all will play for three different teams. Tyler’s modified program starts next week, but Devin and Nick have both been practicing and playing scrimmages to get ready for the regular season. Nick’s first varsity game was Wednesday. It was cold as usual, but Thursday’s Cannoneer game against Utica College JV team was a lot colder. It was snowing, the wind was whipping, and the temperature before the wind chill gets factored in was 34 degrees. At least our hockey games are under a roof, and there is no wind. The wind was making it hard for both Utica and JCC to control the ball. The first half of the game wasn’t too good for the Cannoneers. It was Utica’s offense against JCC’s defense for most of the first half. Utica was definitely in control, but that didn’t seem to get the Cannoneers down. When the second half started JCC looked like a whole different team, and came back hard and fast. It wouldn’t be enough to take the lead, but I did see a lot of potential in this team. Devin had some very good saves, and the team never gave up even as they sent a shot into the Utica goal as the game clock ran out. Although the game went to Utica 13 to 8, Dev managed to make 22 saves and the Cannoneers proved that they are no easy opponent. I missed their last game that they won against Elmira JV because it conflicted with our last hockey tournament, but I was glad I made it to this one. Although I couldn’t feel my fingers or toes by the end of the game, I walked away very impressed with the Cannoneers. Today Nick played in a scrimmage against the Raiders at home on the turf in the sun, and tomorrow he has another. It wasn’t as windy today as yesterday, so the 30’ weather wasn’t too bad to deal with. I noticed the light towers were swaying pretty good in the wind just as the game was ending. I think we got lucky with the weather this time. Both teams will have their work cut out for them this season, and will have to work hard and play together to succeed. There’s a lot of talent to develop, and this will be a challenge to both coaching staffs. Luckily all my boys are playing for some very good coaches. Trust me, it makes a huge difference in how a season works out.
