Where are we going? I spent the last two days thinking about that. As the end of the year draws near and the holidays start to gear up I think about a lot of things on my drive home from work. Lately it’s been time. Time seems to go by very fast for me lately now with one boy in college and my other two boys growing up very fast, soon to be off right behind him. The best times seem to be entangled in hockey and lacrosse. Too much time away from all that for work makes me appreciate what we all share as a family. No matter how crazy things get at work, it has been both sports that have been the most rewarding and enjoyable balance in my family life. I try to pass on the thought that there’s a lot more to these sports than what goes on during the games or practices. It’s not just the culture or the things you can see on the ice. It’s been sharing such a great game with your friends and families. You learn early on that giving back to the sport has its rewards. Seeing your team progress and improve has always been a pretty big deal for me. That’s why you not only instruct, but also allow your players to work through situations, which present the opportunity to learn how to succeed. I appreciate the rules of the game that mandate that effort, determination, sportsmanship, and heart are ideals that often produce positives. These are some pretty good tools for life. There’s the rich history of hockey to share, and being a fan that ties a lot of things together for a lot of families and friends. It’s what we talk about and what we do. You can teach a player the mechanics of the game, but the intangibles are a bit harder to convey. Where are we going? I don’t know, but I’ll bring my skates.
