Sunday’s clinic went well, although I felt a little worn out most of the weekend, as soon as I stepped out on the ice I felt fine. Tyler had decided to do some net tending, but we didn’t have his leg pads at the house, so he tried using Dev’s. They actually almost fit, but I think there are still a little big for him. He a least got to shut down Nick once or twice on the “1 on 0's”. It was noticeable that the kids that have skated with us this year looked pretty good, I have been pleased with the results from this spring and late summer clinics results. Taking a break in the middle of summer for lacrosse worked out well too. It wasn’t as intense as the regular season ball, and that was a good thing. Our new student coach is really stepping up at practice and working well with the players. I think the student coaching idea works well for many teams. I believe it helps strengthen your program if you are lucky enough to get the right individuals. Tuesday we picked up some pads that fit Tyler. Wednesday we tried them out in the driveway with a little street hockey. They make a big difference in the way he moves. I’d like to see him use them on the ice this weekend, but I’ll be in Atlanta for a week and will miss the Sunday practice. Luckily I’ve got a very good coach filling in. I have my schedule set up to get back in time for try-outs and our next practice. I don’t mind the travel that much as long as I’m back in time for games and practices. It’s rained off and on around the lake, the temperature and wind feel like fall. It’s perfect weather for me, but not quite cold enough yet. Dev had practice with his team today and took time to call and let me know how it went. He’s a good kid, I’m looking forward to seeing them play. The Cannoneers have a very good coach, and I think Dev will have a very good year with the team. I just don’t want to miss too many games. I guess that’s the main point of this entry. The hockey players and lacrosse players I have known and/or coached over the years never cease to impress me with how conscientious, well mannered, and all around good citizen they have grown into. The same goes for many of the individuals associated with both sports. I think a lot of the credit goes to the parents, coaches, and guardians of these players. The whole philosophy behind hockey and lacrosse is a big factor too. These sports build character, and I think that is a big deal, a very big deal. Never forget that. Wherever you go, whatever you do in life, remember what you learned on the ice, the field, and in the stands. You may find it comes in handy now and then.
