It's Father's Day once again, and my youngest two have abandoned me to play X Box 360 at a friend's house. I have neglected, actually avoided buying into the whole X Box world for as long as possible. I made it a reward for good grades for the whole year for the two youngest boys. Report cards come out next week. At least I get one more week without listening to the Xbox noise. I encourage my sons to read books. My youngest enjoys reading, but my two older boys have trouble finding the headphone jack on the books. There aren't any, nor is there a controller port. I love hockey and lacrosse, but I think reading will get you farther ahead in life than racking up a few dozen goals each season. You can read about sports if you want, and you may find that your game improves as your ability to think creatively is exercised from reading. Smart hockey is just that....smart thinking. The whole world and much more is out there in book form somewhere. You need a little of everything in life. Sports, education, family, work ethic, and a little experience to become a well rounded individual. If your whole world is wrapped around just one thing, you're missing out on everything else. My dad always said I would need a backup plan - and I did. Anything can and will most likely happen that can change everything you will do in the future. One bad injury can end a promising sports career. Sometimes it's not that dramatic. You may find that your interests change as you get older and wiser. My advice for Father's Day is this;
Read... you might just come across something you didn't know. My dad had a set of encyclopedias in the house. There was an awful lot I didn't know about the world, in fact I'm still reading and learning every chance I get. Reading is an excellent way to increase your intelligence, and you'll need that to play smart hockey.....and lacrosse.....maybe even that goofy Xbox 360!
PS: I hope it has a cool Hockey game I can play on it.
