Mothers Day

Hockey and lacrosse are sports that involve hitting, falling, getting hit, and sometimes bruising and breaking body parts. These aren’t sports for those with a weak stomach. Chances are pretty good you’re going to get hurt once in a while. That’s why you wear protective equipment and have to follow rules. Nobody wants to get hurt, and nobody should ever want to hurt anyone else. Remember we check to get the ball or puck, not to send the other player to the hospital. People fall, and get hit by shots all the time. We get knocked down, and put our equipment and bodies through the paces all the time if we’re playing hard. Sometimes a clean hit looks a lot worse than it feels to the player, but there are a lot of moms out there in the stands who feel it too. They sit in the stands through the cold, the rain, and the sometimes even the burning sun watching their children play tough and get beat up, poked, pushed, and smashed just for the sake of playing a game. Yesterday I watched my son’s JV lacrosse team enter the stadium for a game against a very strong rival team. The boys had their gear on and looked ready to play. I wondered how much really has changed since the days of the gladiators. Well, now we play for points on a scoreboard as opposed to anything more dangerous, but the helmets look eerily similar, and lacrosse sticks aren’t feather dusters. You take a hit with one of those on an unprotected body part and you’ll know it. Hockey sticks aren’t any softer. Up in the stands all the moms watch. When a player gets hurt, whom do they ask for most of the time? If it hurts, they look for their mom. ……..To all the moms out there who tirelessly support their players, take care of them when they’re sick, and cheer from the stands when their player plays great, and console them through tough times……….Happy Mothers Day!
