December Nor'easter

All through the night the sleet pounded against the windows. It sounded like little stones hitting the glass by the bucket load. The gusts of wind seemed relentless as the storm moved into the area. I had a bad feeling as I listened to the weather updates on the radio that we might wind up canceling the upcoming afternoon game. The visiting team made that decision quite easy. Their area was under a travel advisory and travel to our rink was not going to happen. The storm broke for a few hours, but it would only prove to be a temporary calm. The best thing for today would be to wait for the weather to break and hope we will be able to get some practice in tomorrow. The sleet has been replaced with snow now and looks like our weather advisories will last until noon tomorrow. We had been warned for the last week that a Nor’easter was approaching, so we did have a heads up. I had hoped it wouldn’t be much of anything. I stopped over on the other side of the city Friday night to watch Coach Vanhorn’s son Hunter play high school hockey, so I can’t say I didn’t get my hockey fix for the weekend. Because we had a warning that the storm would be here for Sunday, my wife and I made a run for something I thought we’d really need during the storm: “The Rocket” DVD that just got released in English. It’s not a bad hockey movie. When the movie ended I traveled into the city to pick my middle boy Nicholas up from the Crunch game. The storm was just starting as we traveled out of the city. I wanted to get home before the storm really kicked up; he wanted to stop for a burger. Right now the wind is beginning to pick the snow up and toss it around pretty good. The radio is advising everyone locally to stay off the road, and that two major highways that run through and around the city have a number of accidents. The local airport is canceling and delaying flights. I don’t think this is the storm of the century. Last winter seemed more impressive, but I guess the bottom line is what’s happing now. Well if you can’t hit the ice, hit the books. I think I’ll follow that advice myself tonight.
