Walking In NYC

I really do like to walk. It’s not very practical some times, but if you can, why not. New York City is one example. Driving through the city is not a lot of fun, and at certain times it's not all that fast. Lots of New Yorkers walk. They walk a lot, and you may notice that a lot of them that do walk are in pretty good shape. If you can afford to live within walking distance from everything you need, and where you work, walking may not be a bad idea. It certainly forces you to rethink a few things. What do I really need to take with me when I go somewhere is one thing I had to figure out? Do I need to lug around my laptop and all the notebooks and other stuff I normally carry, or do I just need to carry my phone?
I ended up deciding it had to be phone and my PDA. Now another thing, was “how do I carry all this?” At first I tried using just my pockets, not a great idea after a couple blocks.
I tried cargo shorts, but that’s not very impressive at meetings. Lots of people had messenger bags and backpacks. I didn’t bring mine, so that was out. I ended up compromising and carrying my PDA in my jacket, but for me the city is a little warm for a jacket. Yes, there were people wearing jackets and sweaters. Maybe the walking was warming me up too much. You need walking shoes, and you need to know where you’re going. This I failed miserably at. Luckily I was with people who seemed to know where to go. I’ve been to the city before, but not enough to really know the place. It’s an interesting place, but it’s also an expensive place compared to most of the places I’ve seen. Now getting back to all the walking, lots of people take cabs, but not everyone. I’d rather walk if I can, and only use a cab when it’s really necessary. People down here seem to walk with purpose, like they had to be somewhere, and they were intent on getting there. At home I walk when I don’t really have to be anywhere in particular. Hey, I skate around in an oval rink, but I get on the ice at the same place I exit the ice. I really haven’t gone anywhere except back and forth from end to end. Maybe that’s not such a bad thing for me. At least I know where I’m going even if it isn’t very far at all. I still think most people don’t walk enough. This is probably due to distance and weather. I take my hat off to the people of New York City who walk so very much. Very impressive – keep up the good work.
