“And the old triangle, went jingle jangle
Along the banks of the Royal Canal.“
(Brendan Behan)
Driving home today I was listening to the
Dropkick Murphys. I like their music - it goes well with hockey. Tonight I was emphasizing the importance of triangles and cycling on the ice. With five players on the ice you can set up many different triangles to move the puck. You don’t want to limit your play to only two or three players. You need to use your defense. Some of your best offense can come from a shot on net from the point. Move in for a tip in or look for a quick rebound. That means that your defense has to be ready to play offensively and shoot or move the puck quickly. Don’t move in as a straight line, drop one guy into the middle or set up behind the net. Use those triangles. Read the ice, and learn where the play is going. Look for opportunities and make the goalie move. Catch the defense out of position by moving the play to your advantage, but don’t blind pass or make weak passes that could create a turn over for the other team. Be ready and stay on your toes.
