In the never-ending quest for the newest, coolest, hippest, fastest, and most powerful products – especially when it comes to media and computing, I find myself going back to the older simpler way of getting things done. I’ve lost track of what lacrosse stick is better and more wonderful as a must have, as I have with the slicker, lighter hockey sticks. You still have to catch the ball and shoot the puck, has that changed? My skates are pretty low tech; yet lighter and better built than the skates I wore twenty tears ago. I still have to get around on the ice, but what am I gaining with upgrading my gear every few months? It’s nice to have new stuff, but at some point you’re going to have to do some actual work. I can’t spend hours and weeks searching out the next best thing. I should be spending that time actually doing something. I was typing on an old electronic typewriter a hundred years ago in college – I thought this was really cool at the time. As the PC and assorted computer based software and hardware equipment evolved my work got easier, but soon I was caught up in the quest for more horsepower and some type of device that would actually do my work for me while I did more important work like watch the Flintstones. Sad to say I still have to actually do something to get any real work done. Maybe if I got enough new hockey gear I could just put it all together and send it out on the ice itself to play while I sit in the stands drinking hot chocolate. The same applies to what I’m doing here. I still have to type my thoughts into some kind of word processor. I can’t just think about something and watch it appear on the screen. If I could I’m sure it would not make much sense to anyone else but myself. Bottom line is; if you want to get something done, don’t procrastinate looking for the ultimate thing to make your work almost autonomous. Step up and start doing it with what you have now. It’s probably good enough and was most likely the next best thing once upon a time too. Lace up those old reliable skates, grab that old wooden stick and step out onto the ice. Get your old lacrosse stick and go play some wall ball. Sometimes you may find that that old stuff wasn’t all that bad. Maybe I can find my old DOS is BOSS shirt and fire up the old 386 laptop. Then again, I think I’ll see if the Flintstones are on.
