What’s one of the best things you can do to prepare for the future? I’ll tell you what I believe: “Get as good as you can at what you do” Whatever it is you do, get real good at it. Don’t settle for ok. If it’s something you love, or something you have to do, do it well. You can apply this to your game, schoolwork, or job. In hockey you always try to improve and work on the weak points of your game at practice to bring them up a notch. If you’re a weak stick handler or have a bad shot, make sure you work on it at practice. Put some effort into practice and get as much as you can out of it. If you only focus on the better parts of you’re game and avoid working on the weak parts you do yourself a disfavor. Sometimes it’s not easy or fun to work on your weak points. You need to better your whole game, the good and the not so good parts. You should also try to make the good parts better. If you think you’re the fastest skater on ice, you need to find someone who is faster and work towards that level. I see young skaters avoid stopping on their weak side. If you can’t stop both ways, you need to work on the weak side as much as possible. If you keep avoiding it you’ll develop bad habits or cheap shortcuts that prevent you from reaching your full potential. If you worry about falling at practice, you’re worrying about the wrong things. Players who are really good have to work hard to get to that level. There is a lot of natural talent out there, but that only gets you so far. To get really good at anything you have to put some effort into improving your game. Take stock in what your potential is and work towards developing it by improving each part of your game. The problem may be that you don’t know what your full potential is, or you just don’t realize it, but you’ll never know unless you work towards a goal. That goal probably will change as you develop as a player. You may not be the best, but you can be your best, and that’s not easy
